Freelance software work, bridged by AI

Varve Guru

From a single request to bedrock.

Clients describe what they want in plain words. Developers get a spec they can build from. AI closes the gap in between.

In the client’s words “I want an online store for my pet supplies.”

  1. AUTH Sign-up & login Google & Apple sign-in, 14-day sessions
  2. CATALOG Product lists 3-level categories, 24 per page, sort by new/price
  3. SEARCH Search & filters Name search, price & category filters
  4. CART Cart & wishlist Members only, wishlist under My Page
  5. PAYMENT Payments & shipping Cards & wallets via PG, shipping alerts
  6. ADMIN Admin dashboard Products, orders, members, sales summary
  7. ESTIMATE Timeline & quote 6–8 weeks, fair price range per feature
Client
  • “Just make it like Amazon — isn’t that clear enough?”
  • “I understand maybe half of what the developer says.”
  • “Wait, I had to ask for a login separately?”
  • “Quotes differ by 3× from one agency to the next.”
  • “They say it’s done, but it’s not what I pictured.”
  • “It’s just one more button — why does it cost that much?”
Developer
  • “What exactly does ‘make it pretty’ mean?”
  • “Fifth meeting, and the scope still isn’t settled.”
  • “That feature was never in the brief, but the price stays the same.”
  • “I have no idea what to charge.”
  • “The requirements are scattered across 300 chat messages.”
  • “They assumed payments were included.”

Why it matters

What you see is only the tip

Beneath a client’s one-line request hide dozens of decisions a developer needs. Digging them out has always been the developer’s job — and the less outsourcing experience you have, the harder it gets.

A real-world request
“I sell pet supplies. I’d like products shown by category, with a cart and a wishlist.”

Missing from this sentence

  • Login method
  • Session length
  • Search
  • Product list layout
  • Payment methods
  • Admin panel
  • Timeline
  • Budget
  1. The requirements gap

The client never mentioned login, search, or an admin panel. Rounds of follow-up questions push the schedule back — and less experienced developers don’t even know what to ask.

  2. The scope tug-of-war

Some features matter little but take weeks; others matter a lot and take a day. That difference is hard to explain to a non-developer, so the better choice gets missed.

  3. The price distrust

When the spec is vague, any price can be named. Clients feel overcharged, and newer developers undersell their own work.

Turning words into clear requirements is now the AI’s job.

How it works

Say it. Get a spec.

Clients explain things the way they normally would. Varve Guru asks the rest and organizes it.

  1. Describe it your way

Write what you want in plain words. Fill in a form, or just write a paragraph.

  2. AI asks multiple-choice questions

The AI finds the missing decisions and turns them into easy choices. If nothing fits, write your own answer under “Other”.

  3. A spec and a fair quote

Your answers become a feature-by-feature spec, a timeline, and a fair price range — with what’s in and what’s out made explicit.

  4. Handed to a developer

The confirmed request reaches developers as a spec they can build from. Both sides work from the same document from day one.

Built for both sides

Easier to ask. Easier to build.

Clients

Precise, without knowing code

  • No technical vocabulary needed — your own words are enough.
  • The AI asks about what you missed first — login, admin, and more.
  • Decide with a fair price range, not whatever someone quotes.
  • What’s in and what’s out is written down.

Developers

Focused on building from day one

  • Receive work as a spec you can start on.
  • Spend time coding, not chasing clarifications.
  • Out-of-scope requests are clearly marked as such.
  • Get paid fairly, even with little outsourcing experience.

During the project

An AI that translates between you

Mid-project reviews, change requests, maintenance. Whenever client and developer need to talk again, the AI relays the message in the right language and sorts out whether it’s in scope.

  • Reviews
  • Change requests
  • Scope checks
  • Maintenance
  1. Client

The main button feels a bit flat. Can you make it stand out more?

  2. Varve Guru AI → To developer

Emphasize the main “Buy now” button — stronger color contrast, slightly larger. In scope · Revision

  3. Client

Also, can people log in with Facebook too?

  4. Varve Guru AI → To client

Facebook login wasn’t in the original spec, so it’s classed as extra work (about 2 days). Would you like to go ahead? Out of scope · Extra work

  5. Developer

Button update is live — please take a look.

  3. Automation Workflows · AI adoption
  4. Content & marketing Video · Writing · Ads

About

No one should lose out for not having the right words

Varve Guru is a startup that helps people outsource software development. We want to end the days when people with good ideas get stuck because they don’t speak “developer”, and skilled developers burn out decoding vague requirements.

Our name carries two meanings. A varve is a layer of sediment laid down precisely once a year — a record that proves time. A guru is someone who shows the way. Guiding a one-line request until it becomes something solid is what we do.

FAQ

Questions

What is Varve Guru, and how is it different from other outsourcing marketplaces?

You describe what you want in plain words, and our AI turns it into a developer-ready requirements spec and a fair estimate range. On other marketplaces you write the brief yourself and compare scattered quotes; here the AI does that work with you — and keeps helping both sides communicate during the project.

Do I need any technical knowledge?

No. Start with something like “I want an app that does X.” The AI asks follow-up questions to fill in the rest.

How do the AI’s questions work? Can I give an answer that isn’t listed?

The AI asks multiple-choice questions about details that are easy to miss, such as login method, search, and an admin panel. If no option fits, choose “Other” and write your own. “I’m not sure” is a fine answer too.

How is the estimate calculated? Is it a fixed price?

We give a fair price range based on your finished requirements. It’s a guide to help you decide, not a binding quote — you and the developer agree on the final price.

What happens if my requirements change mid-project?

The AI checks whether a new request is inside or outside the agreed scope and tells both sides. If it’s out of scope, it summarizes the change so you can agree on any new timeline or cost. It works the same way during reviews and maintenance.

What do developers get, and why join?

A clear spec with features and constraints spelled out — not a vague idea. Less time chasing requirements, and a written scope to point to when a request goes beyond it.

What kinds of projects can I bring?

Right now we focus on software development, such as web and mobile apps. We plan to expand into design, automation, and more.

Is my idea and data safe?

How we handle project details and personal data will be set out in our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. If you have questions, just email us.

How do I get started, or get in touch?

Email [email protected] with the project you have in mind, or if you’d like to join as a developer. We’d love to hear from both clients and developers.
